Fearless fishing in nasty conditions

RASSPL - Rock and Surf Super Pro League (First Competition)

Zululand Observer - Tuesday, 13 September 2011

Fearless fishing in nasty conditions

STORY: Cenessa Stork

A beautiful Natal Stumpnose caught first prize for Willie Vorster

Despite terrible weather conditions, the first Rock and Surf Super Pro League (RASSPL) catch and release fishing competition was well attended. Fishing between Cape Vidal and St Lucia, participants used different types of bait aimed at making the competition more interesting. Fly fishing, drop shot, big and small bait were all used with success. This species competition normally brings in various interesting fish, but in the strong south-westerly wind and extreme rainy conditions, only a couple of fish over 1kg were caught - which was good enough for the main prizes nevertheless. The top three winners took home brand new Shimano reels with tackle and other anglers won some grand spot prizes. Not only were there big winners but also one loser. Instead of turning left after he crossed the dune, he turned right and the rodless angler spent more time searching for his lost ghillie than reeling in big fish. Deon Dickenson lost a bus of a shark and Llewellyn Baxendale unfortunately, burnt a big one too. It pays to become a league member as you stand a chance to be invited to the national event where the winner drives away with a 4x4, but only if you end up in the top 30 in KZN.
Winners
1 - Willie Vorster, 49,5cm Natal Stumpnose;
2 - SJ van der Westhuizen, 46cm Shad
3 - Jason Dunn, Lessor Sand Shark 84cm.
The next competition in St Lucia is on 22 and 23 October.
Entry forms are available at Raggie Tackle or join the briefing on Thursday 20 October at 6pm at the St Lucia Ski Boat Club to enter.
Entering fee is R150 per non angler.
